    Answer the following questions in relations to your selection:
  1. Describe in detail the type of investigation you are conducting and for what type of crime. (Describe a crime scene – This can be completely of your own making, taken from a documented crime, a television show, or a book you have read on a specific crime. Get creative).
  2. Prepare a detailed plan that outlines the investigative and management steps your investigation will go through, from the beginning (when the crime was reported or discovered) to the end (when the perpetrator will be convicted).
  3. Discuss the steps that are involved, who is involved, and what role they play. Be sure to identify the role of the primary officer at the crime scene investigation, police management, further investigating officers or agencies, and the prosecution.
  4. Analyze the unique attributes this particular crime has and how you will deal with these issues in the investigation. (For example, is the crime scene underwater? How do you investigate? Did the robbery involve a weapon? How do you investigate?)
  5. Discuss the specific laws you must adhere to in order to create a flawless report for the prosecutor.
  6. Identify the specific issues you must deal with in the investigation of this particular crime (e.g., media exposure,
    community acceptance, other agencies involvement and cooperation, chain of evidence, trial testimony)?

Theft and Burglary Investigations. Burglaries are the silent dread of everyone who has a lock on his or her door. Burglary can take many forms and the investigation of burglaries requires attention to detail. Analyze bothof the burglary cases below and address the corresponding questions for oneof them.
  1. A 54-year-old woman was arrested outside of a business after a silent alarm went off, alerting an officer in the area. The officer found her prying at a side door using a crowbar.
    •   What should the primary investigation consist of?

  2. There have been a series of thefts of expensive convertibles in the community. The thefts are occurring during the day. No witnesses or victims have any suspect information. In one case, the owner unknowingly observed his car being driven away, but did not realize it was his own convertible until he reached his garage to find it gone. None of the cars have been recovered. Cars are not stolen on days when there is snow on the ground. At one scene, officers found some type of debris that was consistent with parts of a convertible top.
     What actions would you take as an investigator? Why?

  1. Three of the fifteen convenience stores in your community have been robbed within the last month, all between 11:00 p.m. and midnight. The suspect, who was captured on security videotape in two of the robberies but wears a ski mask over his face, is apparently responsible for the robberies. His modus operandi is to enter the store when it is empty, point a gun (revolver) at the clerk, and demand all the money in the cash register. The suspect speaks with a stutter and had difficulty speaking during one of the robberies. The clerks all said they smelled alcohol on the suspect.
